MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

SIMON’s community-based Mental Health Program is geared towards reducing cases of mental illness through public education campaigns and supporting referral processes to detect, assess and provide appropriate intervention to persons with mental illness or psychosocial disability.

Objectives:

 

  • Promote mental well-being through public education campaigns
  • Early detection, assessment and treatment of mental health problems and illness
  • Eliminate mental health stigma and discrimination

  • Capacity building
  • Referral of clients with psychosocial disability

Activities:

 

  • Organization of Mental Health Committee
  • Setting up of referral system in the CBID areas
  • Identification and assessment of persons with psychosocial disability in the communities
  • Referral of clients to partner agencies for appropriate psychosocial intervention
  • Advocacy and community awareness campaigns on mental health issues, stigma and discrimination
  • Basic Mental Health Training for community health workers and volunteers
  • Psychological First Aid
  • Participation in the activities of Bicol Regional Mental Health Team

How the Program is Being Implemented:

  • Area Selection

    • High prevalence of mental illness cases
    • Presence of existing survey of persons with mental impairment
    • Depressed barangay/area

  • Community Entry

    • Orientation of officials in the municipal and barangay levels to raise awareness on the Mental Health Program
    • Lobbying for allocation of funds to support mental health programs and services

  • Identification Phase

    • Identification and initial assessment of clients with psychosocialdisabilities are carried out by CBR Volunteers and Barangay Health Workers.

  • Referral Service

    • Clients in need of psychosocial intervention are referred by the Area Coordinator/CBR Coordinator to our partner mental health institutions in the area.
